Digital Flashcards

Who hasn’t been there – staring blankly at a test question, knowing you’ve seen the formula or concept dozens of times before, but somehow it’s just out of reach? Or struggling to recall the subtle difference between two words, like “effect” and “affect”, despite knowing you’ve learned it before. Or trying to remember the order of operations in a mathematical equation, or the meaning of a scientific term as the seconds tick by. At Winward Academy, we understand that these moments of frustration are all too common, and that’s why we’ve developed a powerful tool to help students overcome them.

We provide access to curated sets of digital flashcards, tailored to support the core content in our online lessons. With our online flashcard system, students can review and practice key concepts, formulas, and vocabulary words at their own speed, reinforcing their understanding of the material and building their confidence. Each flashcard is carefully crafted to focus on a specific concept or question, allowing students to target areas where they need improvement and quickly fill knowledge gaps.

Moreover, our digital flashcards are designed to be interactive, allowing students to quiz themselves and track their progress in real-time. Whether students are trying to remember the formula for calculating the area of a circle or the difference between “its” and “it’s”, our flashcards provide instant feedback and structure to help master the material and achieve academic goals.

Winward Academy’s Flashcards Feature
Our digital flashcards ensure students are able to quickly retrieve valuable information, terms, and formulas so they can succeed on complex content:
  • Review and practice key concepts with interactive flashcards
  • Organize your cards based on your own performance and confidence
  • Master frequently tested content so you can focus on more complex concepts

How to Maximize the Benefits of Flashcards

Flashcards are a new and important part of how students learn on Winward Academy, and we hope all of our students use this powerful tool to achieve their goals. Once logged in to Winward Academy, students have the option to choose among English, Math, Reading, and Science flashcards. There are decks of cards for each subject area. Students will start out with the New deck where all of the available cards in a topic begin.

Three Piles of Flashcards — New, Review Again, and Mastered
Front of Flashcard

Students begin with the New flashcard pile by clicking on Launch Deck. They will be presented with a question and then when ready, they can click View Answer. This will flip the card over to the back where the answer will be shown with a brief explanation. Students will then have the option to place the card in one of two decks based on their level of mastery: Review Later or Mark as Mastered.

Back of Flashcard

If the card is placed in the Review Later deck, it will be set aside for further review. Students should place cards here when they don’t feel confident in the topic and they want to review it again soon. When students are confident in their mastery of the card’s content, they can place the card in the Mark as Mastered deck. It’s important to note that flashcards in either the Review Later pile or the Mastered pile are accessible to review any time.

We recommend students use the Review Later deck often until the content can be recalled quickly and reliably.

Top Reasons Why Flashcards are Valuable

Flashcards are a great way to study because they promote active recall, which leads to better memory retention and deeper understanding of information.

Here are the top 7 reasons why flashcards are a powerful tool to add to one’s study skill tool kit. These apply to our online flashcards as well as any flashcards students create by hand for themselves.

  • Active Learning: Flashcards promote active learning as they require students to actively recall information. This engagement enhances memory retention and understanding of the material.
  • Repetition and Review: Flashcards allow for repeated exposure to information. By reviewing flashcards regularly, students reinforce knowledge and improve long-term retention.
  • Portable and Convenient: Flashcards are portable and easy to carry around, making them a convenient study tool. Students can study anytime, anywhere, whether it’s during short breaks or while commuting.
  • Chunking Information: Flashcards help break down complex information into bite-sized pieces. This “chunking” of information facilitates learning and makes it easier to understand and remember.
  • Personalized and Adaptable: Flashcards can be tailored to specific needs. Students can prioritize flashcards based on the content they need to study, focusing on areas where they struggle the most. This ability to tailor the content on the cards to their needs allows for targeted and efficient studying.
  • Self-Assessment and Feedback: Flashcards enable self-assessment as students can test their knowledge and check your understanding by attempting the questions or prompts on the flashcards. Immediate feedback is provided when they flip the card to see the answer, allowing them to gauge progress.
  • Versatility: Flashcards can be used for various subjects and topics, from vocabulary and definitions to equations and historical facts. They can be adapted to suit different learning styles and preferences.

At Winward Academy, we’re committed to helping students succeed academically and develop the skills and knowledge required for college and beyond. We will be adding more flashcards over time so even if students have mastered them once, they should check back in and refresh their skills and try out the newest batch. By leveraging the power of flashcards, we empower students to take ownership of their learning, making it more efficient, effective, and enjoyable.

Happy flashing!
