Prior to registering for official sittings of the ACT, SAT, or SAT Subject Tests, many students and their families want a better understanding of the control they’ll have over how their scores are reported.
The College Board and the ACT offer such control in their “Score Choice” policies (not to be confused with “superscoring” policies of some colleges).
ACT Score Choice
For ACT score reports, students specify the test date(s) they want reported to each school.
SAT Score Choice
When a student orders official score reports be sent to colleges, the default option in students’ College Board accounts is set to send all scores. By using the Score Choice option, a student can override this default by selecting only the score reports he or she wishes to send.
When can students use “Score Choice?”
Colleges determine if students can use Score Choice to report test scores, or if they’re required to submit all their tests scores.
Require that students send all test scores:
- The UC Schools (e.g., UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, etc.)
- Cornell University
- Georgetown University
- Stanford University
- Yale University
Recommend students send all test scores, but do not make it a requirement:
- Boston University
- Johns Hopkins University
- Middlebury College
- Princeton University
- University of Chicago
Allow Score Choice in test reporting and do not require that all scores are reported:
- Brown University
- Dartmouth College
- Duke University
- Harvard University
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Northwestern
- University of Michigan
Students should discuss specifics with their college counselors. These score reporting policies vary by college and change every year. Students should be aware of the most up-to-date policies for each college to which they’re planning to apply.
